SS Club Newsletter Deadline - Winter 2010

The deadline for the next Silver Strike Club Newsletter is Jan 1st, 2010. So get your articles ready to go and in to me soon so I can get everything organized and ready to go for our next newsletter. I am planning on getting the next newsletter out in time for you to receive it before the January Silver Strike Tournament at the Four Queens, Jan 29 - 31st, 2010.

We are also looking for new ideas and articles for the newsletter. I am thinking of starting a series called “Striker Tidbits” where you can just write a quick paragraph of a striking experience instead of a complete article. Almost all of us have had a few interesting experiences while in the pursuit of silver strikes. It would be interesting to hear little stories from people even if just a line or two. With everyone contributing we can make the newsletter a lot more fun and interesting to read.

Send all of your ideas and articles to the 2nd Vice President - Becky Bottemiller at moresunplz@aol.com

Dennis Finn

Dennis Finn, What can I say to pay tribute to this great friend, husband, father and fellow silver strike collector. We met Dennis way back when the club first got organized.  We‘d just started collecting and soon found out, if you have a question, ask Dennis, he‘d have an answer. I don‘t ever remember asking him something that he couldn‘t answer. His knowledge of strikes was phenomenal. My favorite thing about him was the little shit eating grin he had when he‘d found a “good one” which is something he did often. That was my least favorite thing about him. He could track down and get any strike he needed. He‘d put his nose to the ground and track it like a good hunting dog. Next thing you knew he had that grin and was the owner of the “good one”.

We both had a thing about non Nevada strikes. We wanted all of them which we found to be a huge task since there was no documentation of what was out there. At this time, Dennis called me and said “Let‘s do a book on Non Nevada strikes”. I must have been crazy because I said “Okay”. That lead to many hours of typing and many phone calls since I live in Indiana and he lived in California. Just when we thought we had it, I‘d get a call and he‘d say “Found another one to add”.  This went on for months until we decided enough was enough and we went with what we had.  One time, we were in Biloxi in the parking lot of Treasure Island. We‘d met Dennis and Linda down there for some strike hunting. We were going to trade some strikes and see what each other had found. He had pockets full of TI strikes and we were going to trade around to make sure we both had sets of everything. He found different fonts on the TI strikes so back into the casino we went to try to get them all. We had so much fun on this trip, I‘ll never forget it.

Several years ago, Dennis retired and chased his dream, to build a house and relocate in Las Vegas. He wanted to be in the center of strike collecting and have a small new release business. He started out doing well but his health started going downhill. It was hard for him to get around to all the casinos plus it was draining. He hung on as long as his health permitted. Then I heard another “enough is enough”.

I will remember Dennis as the enthusiastic, no holds barred collector that he was. He gave me priceless knowledge without asking a thing in return. I will miss the grin and the person that I can truly call a friend. He was The Man in the silver striking world.  There‘s no doubt in my mind that he‘s up there leading us to the next “good one”. We‘ve lost one of the best silver striker‘s that ever lived. Rest in Peace, Dennis. We‘ll miss you!

Christy

Halloween Trip

What a Halloween trip. I thought New Year's was quite a trip in Vegas but Halloween put it to shame. The people and the costumes were unbelievable. It is a must see for anyone who has missed it. Fremont Street was almost as crowded on Saturday night as it is on New Year's Eve. Entertainment was all over and everyone had a great time.

The Four Queen's Halloween strike is awesome, one of Shaun best. The artwork on both the $200 and red cap are beautiful. Hope everyone got one for their collection. For the first time ever the red caps were gone, all 500 of them by Tuesday before we left. There were lots of new people there watching us play the silver strike machines and before you know everyone wanted to play the machines and get one of those red caps. Of course the $200 were gone by Sunday.

Sam's Town started the series of their new 12 muscle cars. They had three new clears in the strike machines for the week end. They are very popular and these cars will be their new house strikes. Sam's Town plans on releasing the COBRA $200 for the January Silver Strike Tournament week end. Time to start making plans for this one.  What a great Christmas present, a trip to Vegas for the tournament.

We are hoping that the Palms will be releasing their new Farrah Fawcett strikes in January for tournament. We did see their Chips release of the Farrah Fawcett and they are beautiful. I believe they are considering 3 new clears, a red cap and a $200. Sounds like a great way to start of the New Year.

The next big Silver Strike event will be the Four Queens annual Silver Strike Tournament January 29, 30 and 31. Please mark you calendars and hope to see you there.

STRIKES AND TREATS IN VEGAS

Its always a treat to have a trip to Vegas and there will be some strikes for Halloween.

The Four Queens will be releasing their new Halloween $200 and red cap. The $200 will be release on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Their red cap should be in play before or by Thursday October 29, 2009.

Sam's Town, There are drag races in Vegas for Halloween week-end, what a perfect time for some muscle cars to play for. There is a good possibility three of Sam's Town 12 new muscle cars will be in their strike machines for that week end. This will be a great time to get a head start on the cars and start collecting your 20 clears for the new $200 COBRA that will be there in the future.

Palms, doesn't look like they will have any news strikes for Halloween but there is artwork in for new cad $10's, red caps, and a $200. Their new strikes will honor Farrah Fawett, what a lovely way to remember such a beautiful person. Looking forward to those in the future.

Planet Hollywood has no plans to have any new strikes at this time and no news on a possible $200.

Hope to see you in Vegas but in case you missed out on this trip I hope to have lots of news after we return. Remember Tournament is just around the corner, right after Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, the busy time of the year and the days will just fly by and January will be here before you know it.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

How did the Treasure Island $200 club auction come about?

Prior to this last convention, Bob Chambers, SS-661, donated a Treasure Island $200 strike to the club with instructions that it was to be sold via auction at the club party which was to take place during the convention. The bidding was to start at $1000 and the full selling price would go to the club. During the convention just prior to the club meeting Bob informed the incoming President that he wanted to modify his donation, he changed it to one Treasure Island $200 strike a year for the next five years. Yes, a total of five Treasure Island $200s. All proceeds from each auction are to go to the club.

Bob stipulated that the club was to auction off one strike a year each year at the club's party held during convention for the next five years starting with the current convention.  The first one to be auctioned would have a starting price of $1000 and the selling price of the first donated $200 would be the starting price of the next auction. This would continue on for all five auctions, that is the last selling price would be the starting price for the next auction. It was decided that Bob would hold each strike until time for the auction and should the club cease to exist the donation of any remaining strikes would be cancelled.

The first auction was held at the club party during this last convention. Don Barton was the winning bidder with a bid of $1450.00. Next year's auction will start at $1450.00.

A BIG thanks goes to Bob Chambers.

Club Silver Strike

The tournament and convention were great this year. A special thank you to everyone who made it possible. Thank you to the outgoing Club Officers. Job well done!  The Cub 2009 Silver Strike is still available. We have 93 left to be sold. Please if you have not bought your strike do so as soon as possible. We need to sell another 15 to break even. If we do not break even we will not be able to have another strike next year. We plan to go ahead with the contest but be aware we may not be able to have the winning design minted. I find it hard to believe that every club member would not want to own at least one. We have over four hundred members and not even half have bought strikes.

The silver strikers annual convention is just around the corner. I'm sure there will be exciting times for everyone. Besides the annual CC&GTCC convention and trade show, there will be other fun events that we will all be attending. I hope to see many of my old as well as new friends at this convention.

First of all, there will be another silver strike slot tournament which is being held by the Palms Casino on June 22nd and 23rd (Monday - Tuesday). On June 23rd in the afternoon, there will be a complimentary lunch, followed later with the award ceremony for the tournament participants. There will be cash prizes as well as a new quarter pound token that will be issued to all participants. Good luck to everyone.

On Wednesday morning, the Palms Casino will be issuing a new $200 token. This will be followed at 2pm with a trade session being held at the Four Queens casino in the Royal Pavillion room (second floor).

Thursday morning at 10am will be the opening of the 17th annual trade show being held at the South Point Casino. The club was provided a table to help advertise the Silver Strikers Club. Again we thank the CC&GTCC for their hospitality in providing the club a table.  It is greatly appreciated. Hopefully there will be a few members who will volunteer to help man the table. At 4pm the Silver Strikers club will hold it's annual Forum followed by the clubs meeting and transferring the duties to the new board.

On Friday morning, the Four Queens Casino will be issuing a new $200 token. I know everyone will be there. This will be followed by the annual Silver Strikers party that is also being held at the Four Queens Royal Pavillion room at 6pm. There will be excellent food as well as great door prizes for everyone to win. Thank you to Judy Barton who set up another great menu for the members.

On a side note, it is very unfortunate that many members do not realize that the club has a web site. Even though we have posted this information over and over. The clubs site has a menu that would address all of the concerns and issues such as applications, finances, by laws and dues as well as email addresses and numbers that board members could be reached.

Some members rather go to the strike point site, which is not a club site to voice their concerns. Don't get me wrong, it's a great site to exchange information, trade or sell things as well as have a lot of humor. However, club concerns could easily be answered on the clubs web site. Many members who do not read the clubs site do not realize that they are missing a lot of great information.

I want to take this time to thank all of the great members who continue to support this club.  I thank all of the Board member partners for their dedication and excellent work they've done to keep the club moving forward. Thanks to Pam Martin who continues to apprise the members of the current trend of the program. She also tries to get other casinos to join in on our program.

This has been a great and educational experience for me. Hopefully there will be more casinos participating in silver strike program, as there is a rumor that other casinos have shown interest. I hope to see all of you in Las Vegas in June.

I would like to clarify the issue regarding Dan Hanagriffs trip to pick up a slot machine for the Silver Strikers club. This was a great deed on his part but there is a clarification that was needed.

First of all Dan was asked by myself and Secretary Jim Munding to get a hold of the donors and have them provide papers to assure that the donated slot machine was donated by them and now belongs to the Silver Strikers Club. Because the machine is being kept at the CC&GTCC warehouse, these papers would avoid any conflict later on down the years as to who the machine belongs to.

If the machine was given to him, and he is donating it to the club, papers should also be provided to the club by him. Second, Dan was asked to submit a breakdown of his expenses with receipts and the club was willing to reimburse him. I for one will not approve any open book for expenses without documentation.

However, to date Dan has not responded in any way to these requests and therefore the club did not provide financial aid to Dan.

This report is submitted to provide facts regarding this issue so members are not being misled as to why the club did not help Dan.

A continued analysis of the clubs membership reveals numerous members have failed to renew their annual membership fees. Members have been sent reminders informing them that their dues are about to expire. After a month of non payment, the member is deleted from the roster.

Several members are beginning to renew their dues after several months have passed beyond their expiration date and their names were removed from the roster. This begins to create a problem. The deleted member now must be replaced into the roster. New rosters have to be made for new members so they have accurate information. New cards, more postage and more printing expenses.

Several members are submitting their late dues by sending in $10.00 to update their membership. The fees have been $15.00 for over two years. It has been posted on the web site for two years. During the last two years, numerous reminders have been sent out However the problem continues. Currently 15 more members are late with their dues for the month of April.

Procedure:

Effective at the end of April 2009:

Members that failed to update the membership dues after a month and wish to renew their membership will be assessed an $8.00 processing fee. This will be added to their annual dues of $15.00. A new number will also be assigned to this member.

If you do not know your expiration date, or have a new address or email address, please contact Leroy Rico at ricol001@hawaii.rr.com.

If you have suggestions or ideas please contact me at ralphfajardo@hawaii.rr.com.

Finally, a reminder that club cards shall be presented to attend the clubs annual party on June 26th Friday 6pm at the Royal Pavillion room at the Four Queens Casino. A current roster will also be present to assure membership. A $15.00 fee will be assessed to non members (They will also receive a membership application).

STRIKES, STRIKES AND MORE STRIKES

The Tournament was the best ever. EVERYTHING was just perfect. The Four Queens and everyone there were wonderful, it was totally a strikers week end at the Four Queens. Special thanks to everyone at the Four Queens for all their royal treatment. Sam's Town released their first new $200, Mystic Falls Park. What a gorgeous strike it is and is it one to have in your collection especially with all the clear caps and red caps that go with it in their Mystic Falls series. They have about 40 left so if you are coming to Vegas anytime soon you still have a chance to play for your $200 to add to your collection. Tim did mention that he is working on his next series and he hope to use some of the ideas that were suggested to him at last year's convention at our Forum. I can't wait to see what will be next from Sam's Town.

The Palms released a remake of the Statue of Liberty and the Cuda. Both have a few new touches and there were plenty of us there to get one. Thanks to the Four Queens, Palms and Sam's Town for a great week end.

Ready to go again? March looks good. The Four Queens will be releasing their new $200 Queen of Clubs plus two red caps Queens of Clubs .999 silver and Queen of Spades, clad. The Queen of Spades will be clad as it was approved as a clad and the dye had been made before the change over was final. The Palms did mention that they were considering releasing their Christmas $200 and red cap. These strikes were approved right after we had all left town in January. We are hoping they will release them for this week end instead of waiting for convention, I know Craig has plenty of ideas for strikes at convention. Planet Hollywood has a new red cap that was just approved so hopefully it will be in the strike machines by March 20. Perfect timing as a few strikers will be in town to play for our own. Here's hoping he will get plenty of play and consider getting another one for convention.

Hope everyone can make it to Vegas for this March release. If not don't forget convention is just around the corner, June 24, 25, 26, and 27, 2009.

It is through the Silver strike Club that I have met many wonderful and excellent members. Because of this club, I was able to learn a lot more about silver strikes and various methods of collecting them. Because of this club, I met many new friends and was able to share life's stories with them. This is a great club and I've tried to enhance it's goals in ways other than just collecting strikes.

During my acceptance of becoming the clubs president, I asked members to submit stories that everyone could enjoy as well as outstanding accomplishments by members in their state that they live in. We could create an award annually for outstanding performances such as a life saving incident or creation of new ideas that the club could pursue. Also stories of members who are in dire straits would be informative to members.

However, after submission of events to Hanagriff and Kathy Archer, they decided that they have the authority and are at liberty to alter, delete, or change any message that I or any board member submit to be posted in the newsletter. Dan and Kathy decided that if anything is not silver strike related to them, they will delete it. However on a recent strike point message, Dan asked to have someone give him information on a donkey so he could post it in the newsletter.

Effective immediately, the presidents message will be posted on the clubs web site and not in the newsletter. This is so members will be able to read my exact message that has not been altered in any way. If Dan wishes to continue to run things in his way, he should run for president.

Presidents message

All Members

The January tournament was fantastic. Everyone there was in a happy, festive mood. A very special thanks to Mr. Shaun Webster and the staff of the Four Queens Casino for their outstanding efforts in making the tournament a success. From the onset (arrival at the Four Queens) everyone was made comfortable and placed in a happy mood.

The tournament began on Friday evening with an excellent dinner. Members were mingling with each other and trading silver strike war stories. You could hear members commenting on how wonderful the food was as well as how stuffed they were.  The slot tournament began on Saturday morning and you could see many exciting and happy faces. During my time slot Judy Barton excited everyone much more with her outstanding double diamonds points.

The tournament provided a $200.00 token of Cleopatra that members could try to obtain. These tokens were first given to participants of the tournament.  Three red caps complimented the $200.00 token. This exciting and happy mood continued throughout the casino as members tried to obtain the three different red caps. Many trades were also being made. I noticed on several occasions whereby members gave a red cap to another member that spent a lot of money but could not win a red cap.

This was just part of the great time everyone had in Las Vegas. The Palms Casino had two $200.00 tokens that were being issued. Members arrived early and lined up for one or both of these strikes. A $200.00 Cuda and Liberty was issued.  Thanks to special security officer Mr. Bob Chambers who assured that no one would cut in front of the line.

Much thanks to Mr. Craig Karnotowski of the Palms Casino who made this trip successful for all of the members. Craig tries very hard to make the silver strike program a success and members really appreciate his efforts. Thanks again Craig.

On Friday morning, members rushed out to Sam's Town to obtain a two hundred dollar token. This strike depicted their (Sam's Town) Mystic park theme. It portrayed several animals on the strike. This is the first $200.00 strike that was issued by Sam's Town. Thanks to Mr. Tim Rambo and his tireless efforts in supporting the silver strike program.

In all, this was a great trip for me. I was able to get a two hundred dollar strike from each of the three casinos. It was very pleasing to meet many new members as well as all of the old timers. It was also nice to be able to place some of the names with faces.

Finally, the annual convention will be held on June 24th to the 27th at the South Point Casino. There will be a trade session on June 24th in the Royal Pavilion room at the Four Queens Casino. The annual Silver Strike party will be held in the Royal Pavilion room on June 26th at 6pm. Only paid members will be allowed to attend the party. Membership cards should be presented at the door. An updated roster will be present to assure membership.

TOURNAMENT TIME

Sam's Town will be releasing their first new $200, Mystic Falls Park will be released on Friday January 23 at 10:00 a.m. They will be available at the main cage all week end and there will be plenty to go around, minted 200. They will be accepting all of Sam's Town strikes for their new $200. There is also a possibility that the last of their red caps the Bear will be released that weekend.  I am really looking forward to seeing the new $200 and adding it to our collection of the Mystic Falls Park $10 silver strikes. What a great series of strikes and I hope everyone will be able to include this one in their collection. Tim has some great ideas for the future and he is going to try to use some of the suggestions and ideas that were mentioned at last year's Forum.

Palms strikes for the week end will include a red cap .999 silver and a $200 Christmas Santa, Sleigh and reindeer. We cannot give a release time as the strikes are in final approval and will be minted sometime next week. As soon as there is any definite time it will be announced.

Binion's will not have their strike machines up and running for tournament but expect them back in the future. Yes they will be back.

Planet Hollywood has one new clad approved Pleasure Pit, and red cap in the future.

Four Queens Slot Tournament January 23, 24, and 25, 2009
Friday January 23, 2009 4:00-6:00 p.m. Welcome cocktail reception and registration
Saturday January 24,2009 6:00 p.m. Trade session

  • $200 - Cleopatra Queen of the Nile
  • $10 red cap - Cleopatra Famous Queens of History
  • $10 red cap - Cleopatra Queen of the Nile
  • $10 red cap (clad) - Queen of Diamonds

I know there are many who are disappointed that Binion's will not have their strike machines in play but the good news is the Four Queens will have 5 silver strike machines in play tournament week end so once again a negative turned into a positive.

I would like to thank Tim at Sam's Town, Craig at the Palms, Shaun at the Four Queens, Jenny at Sunshine Mint and Sean at Sunshine Mint for all their hard work and wonderful support of the silver strike program. What a week end that has been made just for strikers.  Thank You, Thank You!

There are only two more clad red caps to be release, Four Queens, Queen of Diamonds and Queen of Spades, all other red caps will now be .999 silver.

Membership information

Every month, Leroy Rico, who is the first Vice President of the club, updates all information pertaining to the club members. He corrects all changes in addresses as well as e-mail addresses. He also deletes unpaid members. Leroy goes as far as reminding members a month ahead of time that their membership will soon expire, and if they have any changes in their status, to let him know. All of this updated information is sent to Hanagriff a month before the newsletter is to be sent out to member.

Hanagriff is assured that the information he has is current. An update roster is also sent to Hanagriff. Regardless of the updated information, there were numerous kicbacks of newsletters due to a wrong address or a wrong e-mail. However in analyzing the kickbacks it was found that there were errors in the sender. These errors were brought to the attention of the 2nd VP Hanagriff.

He was asked to double check to see if he listed the correct address before sending the letters out. He was asked to look at the updated information that was given to him.  He was asked to see if the corrected e-mail was posted (often times, a missing comma or dot will create a rejection). These issues were again discussed with him at our annual meeting with the entire board present.

The responsibility of the newsletter is that of the 2nd Vice president. He is not asked to update or correct anything pertaining to the membership. He is only asked to assure that he sent the newsletter to the correct listed address. However, he has stated on several occasions, "I didn't think I had to work when I ran for 2nd Vice President". He also adamantly stated "I'm not going to follow up on newsletters, it's not my job".

In our annual meeting he was told that he simply had to look at the roster to see if the letter was sent out correctly. He again stated to the board. It's not my job and I'm not going to do it. Secretary Munding then told him if he can't do it he (Munding) will do it.

Therefore I believe that the responsibility of the newsletter is that of the 2nd Vice President who is currently Dan Hannagriff. Furthermore, as President of this club, my initial message that is posted regarding the newsletter will stand. All rejects will go to Hanagriff to be assured that he sent it out correctly.

As of June 20, 2007 & until farther notice !!!!  (Not a misprint)

The SS club newsletter staff will not be the club personal to keep up with any club members lists or rosters. This is the duty of the 1st Vice-president. He is the person who keeps the members information updated. If you do not get the club newsletter then notify the 1st VP as he has the ability to update any club member information because he has the club records. We the newsletter staff do not have the ability to do this we DO NOT have the club records. Our job is to gather information for the newsletter, put it together, get it to the printer, and to the members using the updated present members email & Post Office lists.  The newsletter staff can ONLY do this if the CORRECT information is furnished to us by the 1st VP. Just because we do the club newsletter doesn't mean we are roster & list keepers also. We have enough to do with the producing newsletter each quarter. I recommend that you do not send the newsletter staff any changes you want to your email address, method of receiving the newsletter, Post Office address changes, or newsletter not received problems. We will only forward them to the 1st VP for him to decide what to do with it. If the change is not updated by him to the proper roster or list. There is nothing the newsletter staff can do about this. We DO NOT update any list or roster information pertaining to the club members.-- SEE the 1st VP about this -- Another thing the 1st VP is the only person who can verify if you are a payed up SS club member entitled to a club newsletter.
